Dragonfly System technology offers an exciting alternative to the
use of conventional pesticides for controlling mosquitoes, biting
flies, biting midges, no-see-ums, sand flies, etc. In 2005, pest
control experts will be able to use the Dragonfly System
professional model with advanced Adaptive Control Technology. This
allows automatic CO2 level adjustment, emitting more CO2 as mosquito
activity increases and shutting itself off when activity stops.
The Dragonfly Professional will be able to gather useful data:
- Measuring the rate of mosquitoes hitting the electrostatic
panels
- Recording the number of insect hits over time
- Using an IR (infrared) link to a handheld computing device,
data can be uploaded to mosquito activity mapping software
Creating a barrier system
Field tests at a residential development in Florida have
shown that a line of CO2 traps using BioSensory Octenol lure can form an effective
barrier that dramatically controls mosquitoes -- even when the
location is surrounded by a mangrove swamp breeding site. Test
results show that when the network of devices was on, mosquitoes
inside the 2,400-foot barrier quickly dropped to about 10% of
the level outside. What's more, operating costs for the
permanent mosquito control barrier were only a few dollars per
resident per week - significantly less than the district was
spending for temporary relief with repeated aerial pesticide
applications. Collier Mosquito
Barrier Research Report
Dr. Jeffrey Stivers, head of Research for the Collier Mosquito
Control District in Florida, built an experimental 2,400-foot
(730 m) mosquito barrier to protect the Stevens' Landing Condominium
Association.
